Live music and dance in Oxfordshire

Folk festivals are a great place to see live morris dancing. Also see the individual sides' pages below for details of upcoming dance outs.

Folk Weekend Oxford www.folkweekendoxford.co.uk 
Takes place in late March/early April. Hundreds of morris dancers perform free in Broad Street, Cornmarket and at the Castle.

Towersey Folk Festival www.towerseyfestival.com
One of Oxfordshire's best established folk festivals. A small selection of invited sides performs each year.

May Morning www.maymorning.co.uk
Local sides dance at Magdalen Bridge, Radcliffe Square and around town to welcome in the spring on 1 May in this great Oxford tradition.

Encyclopedic collection of musical instruments including nineteenth century and replica pipe and tabor sets.

Bodleian Broadside Collection

A searchable catalogue of ballad lyrics from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. Not particularly morris-related but well worth a visit.

The Museum of English Rural Life, Reading

A good place to get a sense of the daily life of village morris dancers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford www.prm.ox.ac.uk
An amazing array of anthropological specimens and artworks from all over the world. English items include dessicated hot cross buns, a witch in a bottle and Headington Quarry morris kit collected by Percy Manning in the early twentieth century.
