Oxford town sides

Three new morris sides were founded in Oxford in the 1920s.
The British Workmen's side was set up by former members of the Headington Quarry side.
Oxford Morris Men (which eventually led to the creation of the Oxford City side) were members of the University.
There was also an Oxford Police side, formed after the City team caught their eye at the 1923 May Day celebrations.

From the Oxford City Morris Men archive:“Philip Terry says, ‘Some policemen were on duty to see that we did not unduly interfere with the traffic, and vice versa. They were so much attracted by the Morris dancing that they asked us to put them in touch with someone from whom they could have lessons. As a result the Oxford police took up Morris dancing enthusiastically and for many years sent a team to Folk Dance festivals at the Albert Hall...’

Theo Chaundy reported that the police side ‘had much success until at a performance a fourteen-stone officer went through the platform. This discouraged them.’”
