Old Speckled Hen

In the past, morris sides in Oxfordshire all danced the Cotswold tradition. They were usually made up of men from small, village communities.

Old Speckled Hen are typical of newer sides. They dance a tradition from outside the area and include both male and female dancers. The members come from a wider area and represent a community of shared interests and enthusiasm.

The side is named after Old Speckled Hen beer, once brewed by Morland in Abingdon.

Clogs, 1990s

The clog style of morris dancing comes from the north of England where clogs were traditional working class footwear until the twentieth century. Both men and women took part in the dancing.

Sticks and bobbins, 1990s

The decorated sticks are held in each hand and emphasise the movements of the dance. The unpainted sticks are known as bobbins. They are a similar shape to the bobbins used to wind threads in the Lancashire textile mills.
